Ingleside Vineyards is a well-known winery located in the Northern Neck region of Virginia. It is part of a special wine-growing area called the Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace AVA. Ingleside is one of the oldest and largest wineries in Virginia. The Flemer family has owned the large estate, which is over 3,000 acres (12 km2) big, since 1890. The winery itself started making wine in 1980.

A Look Back in Time: History of Ingleside

The main building at Ingleside is an old farmhouse that was built in 1834. It was first known as Washington Academy. This building is made of brick and has two stories. It features a grand front porch with six columns, called a pedimented hexastyle front portico. On each side of the main building, there are smaller, one-story sections.

The Washington Academy was a school that operated until about 1844. The property was then sold in 1847.

In 1979, the farmhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical places in the United States. The vineyard also owns two other historic houses nearby that are on this list: Wirtland and Roxbury.

Grapes and Government: Mark Warner's Connection

Mark Warner is a well-known politician who used to be the governor of Virginia. Now, he is a United States Senator. Senator Warner helps Ingleside Vineyards by growing 15 acres (61,000 m2) of grapes on his farm in King George County.

Ingleside Vineyards then bottles a special wine for him. This wine is often used by Senator Warner for charity auctions, helping to raise money for good causes.

What Wines Do They Make?

Ingleside Vineyards makes many different kinds of wines. They produce wines from single types of grapes, called varietal wines. They also make blended wines, which are a mix of different grapes.

Some of the grape types they use include:

  • Cabernet Franc
  • Touriga Nacional
