The Institut aéronautique Jean Mermoz (IAJM) is a special school in France. It trains people to become professional airline pilots. This school has been teaching pilots since 1957. It is named after a famous French pilot, Jean Mermoz.

IAJM is also famous for its books about aviation. These books help students learn about flying. They were first in French, but since 2016, they are also in English. This happened because IAJM partnered with the École nationale de l'aviation civile. The first English books came out at the Paris Air Show in 2017. They were made with Airbus.

The school works with another college called IPSA. Together, they offer a special program. Students can get a Master of Science degree in aviation. They can also earn their ATPL. About one-third of all French airline pilots trained at Institut Mermoz.

Becoming an Airline Pilot: The ATPL Course

The main course at IAJM helps students become airline pilots. It usually takes one year to finish. During this time, students study for 14 important exams. These exams are part of getting an ATPL. The ATPL is a special license that lets you fly large passenger planes.

What You Learn: The 14 ATPL Exams

The 14 exams cover many different topics about flying. Here are the subjects students learn:

  • Principles of Flight: How planes fly.
  • Aircraft General Knowledge – Systems: How plane parts work.
  • Aircraft General Knowledge – Instrumentation: All about the dials and screens in the cockpit.
  • Human Performance: How pilots think and react.
  • Meteorology: Understanding weather for flying.
  • VFR Communications: Talking to air traffic control when you can see outside.
  • IFR Communications: Talking to air traffic control when you can't see outside.
  • General Navigation: How to plan a flight path.
  • Radio Navigation: Using radio signals to find your way.
  • Flight Planning: Preparing all the details for a flight.
  • Aircraft Performance: How fast and high a plane can go.
  • Mass & Balance: Making sure the plane's weight is balanced.
  • Operational Procedures: The rules for flying safely.
  • Air Law: The laws that pilots must follow.

Other Training Programs

Besides training airline pilots, IAJM offers other courses. You can also train to be a private pilot. They also teach people to fly helicopters. And they train cabin crew, who are the flight attendants on planes.
