The Institut aéronautique Jean Mermoz (IAJM) is a special school that trains people to become professional airline pilots. It also helps airlines find skilled staff. This school has been training pilots since 1957. It is named after a famous French aviator, Jean Mermoz.
IAJM is well-known for its books about aviation. These books were first published in French. Since 2016, they have also been available in English. This happened thanks to a partnership with the École nationale de l'aviation civile (French Civil Aviation University). The first English books were released at the Paris Air Show in 2017. This was done with Airbus.
The school also works with the aerospace college IPSA. Students can get a double degree from this partnership. They can earn a Master of Science in aviation and an ATPL. About one-third of all French airline pilots have trained at Institut Mermoz.
Becoming an Airline Pilot
The main course at IAJM takes one year to complete. During this time, students study for 14 important exams. These exams are part of getting an ATPL. The ATPL is a high-level pilot license. It is needed to fly large passenger planes. These exams follow rules set by JAA and the EASA.
The 14 ATPL exams cover many topics:
- Principles of Flight
- Aircraft General Knowledge – Systems
- Aircraft General Knowledge – Instrumentation
- Human Performance
- Meteorology (the study of weather)
- VFR Communications (how pilots talk when flying by sight)
- IFR Communications (how pilots talk when flying by instruments)
- General Navigation (how to find your way)
- Radio Navigation (using radio signals to navigate)
- Flight Planning (how to plan a flight)
- Aircraft Performance (how a plane flies)
- Mass & Balance (how weight is balanced on a plane)
- Operational Procedures (how to fly safely)
- Air Law (rules for flying)
More Aviation Training
Institut Mermoz also offers other types of training. They train pilots who fly for fun, called private pilots. They also train helicopter pilots. In addition, the school trains cabin crew, who are the people who work on planes to help passengers.
