The Institute of Jewish Studies in Nanjing, China, is a special place for learning. It works closely with the Department of Religious Studies at Nanjing University.

What is the Institute of Jewish Studies?

This institute teaches about Jewish culture, history, and traditions. It was started in January 1992. This happened after Israel and the People's Republic of China became friends again. Each year, more than 200 students take classes here.

Learning and Research

The Institute offers many courses about Jewish studies. It has also published a Chinese version of the Encyclopaedia Judaica. This is a huge book with lots of information about Jewish life. They have also released many other books and materials.

The Institute is the only school in China that offers advanced degrees in Jewish studies. Students can earn both master's and Ph.D. degrees here. This means they can become experts in the field.

Important Events

The Institute also hosts important events. From August 7 to 12, 2005, it held a big meeting in Nanjing. This meeting was about The Holocaust. This was a very sad time in World War II when many people were terribly harmed because of who they were.

A New Name and Future Plans

In 2006, the Institute got a new name. It became the Diane and Guilford Glazer Institute of Jewish Studies. This happened after the Diane and Guilford Glazer Foundation helped build a new part of the school.

There are plans for the Institute to become even bigger. It might join with the Nanjing University-Johns Hopkins University Institute for International Research. This would help it grow even more.

Who Leads the Institute?

The director of the Institute is professor Xu Xin. He helps guide all the learning and research that happens there.
