What's in a Name?

Interlaken gets its name from a town in Switzerland. The word "Interlaken" means "among the lakes." Just like its Swiss namesake, this California community is surrounded by several lakes. These include College Lake, Pinto Lake, Kelly Lake, Lake Tynan, and Drew Lake.

Interlaken's Climate

Interlaken has a warm summer Mediterranean climate. This type of weather is common in coastal areas of California. It means the summers are warm and dry, while winters are mild and wet.

In January, the average temperatures range from about 40°F (4°C) to 61.5°F (16.4°C). In September, temperatures are usually between 52.4°F (11.3°C) and 74.9°F (23.8°C). The area gets about 30 inches (769 millimeters) of rain each year.

Most of the rain falls from October to May. During summer, morning fogs are common. These fogs can create light drizzle. They also cause "fog drip," where water condenses on trees and drips to the ground. It has never snowed in Interlaken since records began.
