The Interlaken Resort District is a cool historic spot near Twin Lakes, Colorado. It used to be one of the most beautiful and popular vacation places in the Colorado mountains. This resort started way back in 1879. It was first a small hotel called the Lakeside Resort. It sat on the smaller of the two Twin Lakes, right at the base of Mount Elbert.
In the 1950s, the Twin Lakes were made much bigger. This change cut off Interlaken from the main town. After that, you could only reach the resort by boat. The hotel closed down not long after the lake grew larger.
Exploring Interlaken Resort
Interlaken Resort was once a busy and exciting place for people to visit. It offered a peaceful escape in the stunning Colorado mountains. Visitors could enjoy the fresh air and beautiful views. It was known for its amazing scenery.
The Interlaken Hotel Building
The main building at Interlaken was the Interlaken Hotel. It is a two-story building made of logs. If you look at it from above, it has a shape like a cross. It also has brick chimneys right in the middle of its two main sections. This unique design made it stand out.
Why Interlaken Became an Island
The Twin Lakes are actually two connected lakes. In the 1950s, a big project made these lakes much larger. This was done to store more water. Because of this, the land around Interlaken Resort became surrounded by water. It turned into an island! This made it hard for people to get there easily. The hotel could no longer welcome guests.
