The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) is a worldwide group. It connects many organizations that believe in humanist ideas. These groups also include those who are atheist, rationalist, secular, skeptic, and believe in freethought and Ethical Culture.

The IHEU started in 1952 in Amsterdam. A British thinker named Julian Huxley helped create it. He was also the first head of UNESCO. A Dutch politician, Jaap van Praag, was its first chairman until 1975.

What the IHEU Does

The IHEU works to build a global movement for Humanism. It aims to protect human rights around the world. It also promotes values that humanists believe in.

Important Statements and Symbols

In 2002, the IHEU made an important statement called the Amsterdam Declaration. This declaration explains what "World Humanism" officially means. The symbol of the IHEU is the Happy Human. It is a simple drawing of a person with open arms, showing happiness and freedom.

World Humanist Congress

The IHEU usually holds a big meeting called the World Humanist Congress every three years. People from humanist groups all over the world come together. They discuss important topics and plan for the future. The next meeting was planned for 2020 in Miami, United States.
