The International Jute Study Group (IJSG) is an organization where different countries work together. It focuses on jute, kenaf, and other similar plant fibers. Jute is a natural fiber often used to make things like sacks, ropes, and carpets. The IJSG works closely with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its main goal is to make sure that the international trade of jute and kenaf is clear and fair for everyone involved.

What is the IJSG?

The IJSG acts like a special board for jute. This means it helps manage how jute is bought and sold between countries. By doing this, the IJSG helps keep the market stable. It also makes sure that information about jute trade is easy to find. This helps prevent unfair practices and promotes honest business.

How the IJSG Started

Discussions to create the IJSG happened in 2000 and 2001 in Geneva. Many countries agreed to form this group. They signed a special agreement called the Agreement establishing the Terms of Reference of the International Jute Study Group. The IJSG was created to take the place of an older group, the International Jute Organization, which had stopped working.

The agreement was officially approved by several important countries and groups. These included Bangladesh, the European Union, India, and Switzerland. The IJSG officially began its work on April 27, 2002. Its main office, or headquarters, is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Who are the Members?

When the IJSG first started, it had several members. However, Switzerland decided to leave the group in September 2002. The countries that are still part of the IJSG are very important in the world of jute trade. They are responsible for about 60 percent of all the jute bought and sold globally.
