The International Nickel Study Group (INSG) is a special group that brings together different countries. It was started in June 1990 in The Hague, Netherlands. This group works with the United Nations. Since 2006, the INSG has shared its office in Lisbon, Portugal, with two other similar groups: the International Copper Study Group and the International Lead and Zinc Study Group.
How the INSG Started
Before the INSG was created, countries that produced or used nickel met several times. These meetings happened between 1979 and 1986. Their goal was to talk about information on nickel and how to make it better.
After these meetings, the United Nations held a special conference about nickel. This conference took place in late 1985 and early 1986. During this time, on May 13, 1986, the rules for the International Nickel Study Group were officially created.
What the INSG Does
The INSG is an "International Study Group." This means it provides a place for countries and companies involved with nickel to talk. They share information about nickel without trying to control the market. Their main goal is to make sure everyone has clear and accurate information about nickel.
To do this, the INSG watches the nickel market very closely. They share information with their member countries. They also do special studies on different nickel topics. All of this helps to "improve the information available on the international nickel economy."
Today, the most important work of the INSG is its statistics and forecasts. They publish "World Nickel Statistics" and predict future trends for the nickel market. These reports are often used and mentioned in news about the industry, in studies, and in company presentations.
Who Can Be a Member
The members of the INSG are governments from countries that produce or use a lot of nickel. Any country interested in making, using, or trading nickel can join.
Other international groups can also become members. These are groups that help create and follow international agreements, especially those about different goods like nickel.
Current members of the INSG include:
