Interstate 182 (often called I-182) is an important highway in the state of Washington. It is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) long. This road helps people travel through the Tri-Cities area.

I-182 connects Interstate 82 west of Richland to U.S. Route 12 in Pasco. It also shares parts of its path with other major roads. These include Washington State Route 240 through Richland and U.S. Route 395 in Pasco.

About Interstate 182

Interstate 182 is part of the larger Interstate Highway System. This system is a network of highways across the United States. These roads are built to help people travel quickly and safely. I-182 serves as a connector for the Tri-Cities.

The Tri-Cities area includes Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick. These cities are located where the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima rivers meet. I-182 helps link these communities together. It makes it easier for people to get around for work, school, and fun.

Where Does I-182 Go?

I-182 starts in the west near Richland. Here, it connects with Interstate 82 and U.S. Route 12. As it travels east, it passes through Richland. It then crosses the Columbia River on a large bridge.

After crossing the river, the highway enters Pasco. In Pasco, it meets U.S. Route 395. It finally ends when it connects back with U.S. Route 12. This route helps connect the Tri-Cities to other parts of Washington state.

Important Connections

I-182 has several important connections along its route. These connections are called junctions. They allow drivers to switch from one highway to another.

  • State Route 240: This road helps people get around Richland.
  • U.S. Route 395: This highway goes north and south through Pasco. It connects to other cities like Spokane.
  • U.S. Route 12: This route travels east and west. It connects the Tri-Cities to areas like Walla Walla.

History of the Highway

Planning for Interstate 182 began many years ago. The goal was to improve travel in the growing Tri-Cities area. Building a new highway takes a lot of time and effort.

The official start date for I-182 was June 23, 1969. However, it took many more years to build the entire road. Different parts of the highway were built over time.

Building the Road

Engineers and construction workers built the highway in sections. They had to plan for bridges and overpasses. One of the biggest parts was building the bridge over the Columbia River. This bridge connects Richland and Pasco.

The Interstate 182 Bridge was a major project. It opened in November 1984. The entire Interstate 182 highway was finally completed in 1986. This was a big step for transportation in the region.

Why Was It Built?

I-182 was built to help traffic flow better. Before it was finished, getting between Richland and Pasco was harder. The new highway made it much faster and safer.

It also helped connect the Tri-Cities to the national Interstate system. This made it easier for goods to be transported. It also helped people travel for business and tourism. The highway has played a big role in the growth of the Tri-Cities.
