Interval facts for kids
An interval is simply the space or time between two things. Think of it as the "in-between" part. This idea shows up in many different areas, from math to music and even in daily life.

What is a Mathematical Interval?
In mathematics, an interval is a set of real numbers that includes all the numbers between two specific points. Imagine a number line. An interval would be a continuous section of that line.
Types of Mathematical Intervals
There are different ways to describe these intervals:
- Closed Interval: This type includes the two end points. For example, the interval from 1 to 5, including 1 and 5, would be written as `[1, 5]`. This means any number from 1 up to 5 is part of this interval.
- Open Interval: This type does NOT include the two end points. For example, the interval from 1 to 5, but not including 1 or 5, would be written as `(1, 5)`. This means any number between 1 and 5 (like 1.1, 2, 4.9), but not 1 or 5 themselves, is part of this interval.
- Half-Open or Half-Closed Interval: These intervals include one end point but not the other. For example, `[1, 5)` includes 1 but not 5, while `(1, 5]` includes 5 but not 1.
Mathematical intervals are very useful in algebra, calculus, and other areas of math to describe ranges of numbers.
What is a Musical Interval?
In music, an interval is the distance in pitch between two musical notes. It's how far apart two sounds are from each other.
Understanding Musical Intervals
- Melodic Interval: This is when two notes are played one after the other. Think of a melody where notes go up or down. The space between each note is a melodic interval.
- Harmonic Interval: This is when two notes are played at the same time. When notes are played together, they create harmony. The interval describes the relationship between these simultaneous sounds.
Musicians use intervals to build chords, create melodies, and understand how different notes sound together. For example, a "perfect fifth" is a specific musical interval that sounds very stable and pleasing.
What is a Time Interval?
A time interval is simply the amount of time that passes between two events or moments. It's a duration.
Examples of Time Intervals
- Duration of a Class: If your class starts at 9:00 AM and ends at 9:45 AM, the time interval for that class is 45 minutes.
- Travel Time: The time it takes to travel from your home to school is a time interval.
- Waiting Period: If you have to wait 10 minutes for a bus, that 10 minutes is a time interval.
Time intervals help us plan our day, measure how long things take, and understand sequences of events.
What is an Interval in a Performance?
In a live performance like a play, a concert, or a ballet, an interval is a short break between parts of the show. It's also often called an intermission.
Purpose of Performance Intervals
- For the Audience: It gives people a chance to stretch their legs, get a snack, or use the restroom.
- For the Performers: It allows actors, dancers, or musicians to rest, change costumes, or prepare for the next part of the show.
- For the Crew: It gives the stage crew time to change sets or make other technical adjustments.
These breaks usually last about 15 to 20 minutes and help everyone stay refreshed and ready for the rest of the performance.
