Invercargill Brewery is a special place in New Zealand. It's the southernmost brewery in the country! This means it's located further south than any other beer maker in New Zealand. Steve Nally started the brewery in 1999 near the city of Invercargill.

Steve Nally, who founded the brewery, studied chemistry. He taught himself how to make beer. He was one of the first brewers to use special New Zealand flavours. Steve also made sure to use ingredients grown right there in New Zealand. He was an early user of Gladfield malt from Dunsandel.

The first beer from Invercargill was an English-style pale ale called IBS. It was later renamed Stanley Green in 2006.

In 2000, the brewery made Pitch Black stout. This dark beer was designed to go well with the famous Bluff Oysters. It was different because it focused on malt flavours, not just hop bitterness.

In 2001, Invercargill created a beer called Biman. They made it especially for a local curry restaurant.

Growing the Brewery

In 2006, Invercargill Brewery got bigger. They could now make 1200 litres of beer at a time. They also moved to a new location at 8 Wood Street in Invercargill. This move allowed Steve Nally to try out even more new flavours.

In 2007, Invercargill made a Strong New Zealand Pilsner. This pilsner beer has a unique taste from new types of hops. These hops were first called b-saaz and d-saaz. Later, they became known as Motueka and Riwaka.

Also in 2007, Invercargill launched Smokin' Bishop. This was New Zealand's first commercial beer smoked with Manuka wood. It won an award at the New Zealand Beer Awards that year. The beer was even mentioned in a book called 1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die. It became so popular that it was made every winter.

In 2008, Invercargill released Boysenbeery. This fruit beer has a deep colour and also won an award. It became a popular summer beer. In the same year, Biman won a trophy for being the Best New Zealand Style Beer. Biman was also mentioned in Ben McFarland's book World's Best Beers. The beer's name was changed to b.man to make it easier to say.

By 2008, Invercargill started making beer for other companies too. This helped them use their equipment more. One of their first clients was Yeastie Boys. In 2014, Invercargill grew even more. They could now make 2500 litres of beer. They moved production to 72 Leet Street.

In 2014, Steve Nally received a special award. It was the Morton Coutts Trophy for Innovation. The New Zealand Brewers Guild gave him this award. He won it for inventing a new way to package beer in boxes.
