About Ion Chicu

Ion Chicu was born on 28 February 1972, in a village called Pîrjolteni in Moldova. He studied management at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova.
He has held several important roles in the Moldovan government. In 2005, he worked in the Ministry of Economy and Trade. Later, he became the Deputy Minister of Finance. From 2008 to 2009, he was a chief adviser to the Prime Minister on money matters and international relations.
In 2018, he became the Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance. By December of that year, he was appointed the Minister of Finance. He left this job during a political situation in 2019.
Ion Chicu is married and has three children. After his time as Prime Minister, he started his own political party in 2021. It is called the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova. This party supports closer ties with Europe. However, his party did not win any seats in the Moldovan Parliament in the 2021 election.
Time as Prime Minister (2019–2020)
On 14 November 2019, the government led by Prime Minister Maia Sandu lost a special vote in Parliament. This vote meant that the government no longer had the support of enough lawmakers. Ion Chicu was then chosen to be the new Prime Minister. He had the support of more than 60% of the members of Parliament.
On the same day, he promised that his government would continue to work with international partners like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. At the time, President Igor Dodon described Chicu as a "technocrat," meaning someone who is an expert in their field rather than a career politician.
A day later, President Dodon introduced Chicu's new team of ministers. On 20 November, Chicu made his first official visit to Moscow, where he met with the Russian Prime Minister.
In May 2020, Chicu made some comments about Romania that caused a stir. He later apologized for his words during a meeting with the Romanian ambassador. He thanked Romania for its help to Moldova, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chicu himself tested positive for COVID-19 on 9 December 2020.
Ion Chicu and his government resigned as Prime Minister on 23 December 2020. This happened during protests where people were asking for early parliamentary elections. He continued as acting Prime Minister for a short time but was replaced by Aureliu Ciocoi on 31 December 2020.
Political Life After Being Prime Minister
On 31 March 2021, Ion Chicu founded a new political party called the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova (PDCM). It was officially registered on 17 April 2021.
2024 Presidential Campaign
On 22 September 2024, Ion Chicu officially announced that he would run for president in the 2024 Moldovan presidential election. He said he wanted to be the "President of all Moldovans." He promised to work for a better future for Moldova.
His campaign focused on several key areas:
- Improving the number of people living in Moldova.
- Making sure people receive good pensions and social support.
- Helping the country's economy grow.
- Making sure everyone has access to good healthcare.
Chicu stated that he supports Moldova joining the European Union. He believes this is good for the country. However, he was against a special vote (referendum) about EU membership. He thought this vote was "dangerous" for Moldova's independence. He also believed it was a way for the current President, Maia Sandu, to gain more support.
In the first round of the election, Chicu received 31,785 votes, which was about 2.06% of all votes. He did not win the election.
