Natalia Gavrilița (born 21 September 1977) is an economist and politician from Moldova. She served as the Prime Minister of Moldova from August 2021 until February 2023.

Before becoming prime minister, Natalia Gavrilița was suggested for the role in February 2021. However, the Parliament did not approve her at that time. After the 2021 Moldovan parliamentary election in July 2021, she was nominated again and approved.

She was also elected to the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in 2021. From June to November 2019, she worked as the Minister of Finance in the government led by Maia Sandu, who later became president.

Early Life and Education

Natalia Gavrilița was born on 21 September 1977. Her parents are Valery and Nina Catrinescu.

She studied at Moldova State University from 1995 to 2000, earning a degree in International Law. In 2003, she joined the Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program. She also holds a master's degree in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University.

Career Highlights

Natalia Gavrilița has held various important jobs in Moldova's government. She also worked on international projects in different countries.

From 2007 to 2008, she worked in the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure. She was the Head of the Department for Economic Forecasts. Later, from 2008 to 2009, she led the Directorate for Policy Coordination.

Between 2010 and 2013, Natalia Gavrilița worked for Oxford Policy Management in the UK. She was a senior consultant and managed projects. From 2013 to 2015, she was the Chief of Staff and Secretary of State in the Ministry of Education. At that time, Maia Sandu was the minister. Gavrilița also worked as the Executive Director for the World Bank's Education Reform Project.

From 2015 to 2019, she was a Managing Director at the Global Innovation Fund. She managed many new projects worth about 13.5 million dollars. She helped choose and manage projects that aimed to bring new ideas to developing countries in Africa and Asia.

In 2019, she became the Minister of Finance in Maia Sandu's government. She helped Moldova get about 100 million US dollars in financial support. She also helped improve Moldova's relationship with the IMF and the European Union. During her time as Finance Minister, she created a "Solidarity Budget." This budget aimed to increase salaries for some workers and provide help for people in need.

In 2021, the President of Moldova nominated her to be Prime Minister. However, a group of parties in Parliament did not approve her first. She announced her resignation as Prime Minister on February 10, 2023.

After the 2021 Moldovan parliamentary election in July 2021, the Party of Action and Solidarity won most of the seats in Parliament. Natalia Gavrilița was also elected as a Member of Parliament. On 6 August 2021, she was officially elected as the Prime Minister of Moldova.

Political Views

Natalia Gavrilița supports Moldova joining the European Union. However, she does not support Moldova joining NATO or uniting with Romania.

Personal Life

Natalia Gavrilița is fluent in several languages. Besides Romanian, she also speaks Russian, English, French, and Spanish.

Her grandfather, Trifon Catrinescu, fought in the Soviet Army during Second World War. He received a medal for his service.
