Denys Shmyhal (born October 15, 1975) is a Ukrainian politician and businessman. He has been the Prime Minister of Ukraine since 2020. Before becoming Prime Minister, Shmyhal was the governor of a region called Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. He also served as a minister in the government before that.

As Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal has led Ukraine's response to big challenges. These include the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine and defending the country during the 2022 Russian invasion. As of 2024, he is the longest-serving Prime Minister in Ukraine's history.

Denys Shmyhal's Early Life

Denys Shmyhal was born in Lviv, Ukraine. His parents are Anatoly Ivanovich and Irina Feliksovna. In 1997, he finished his studies at Lviv Polytechnic university. He later earned a degree in economics in 2003.

Shmyhal's Early Career

After university, Shmyhal worked as an accountant for several companies. This was from 1997 until 2005. Later, he held leadership roles in different businesses. For example, he was a deputy general director and a director for investment companies. He also led a company called "Rosaninvest LLC" from 2008 to 2009.

Shmyhal's Political Journey

Denys Shmyhal began his political career in Ukraine's Lviv Oblast region. From 2009 to 2013, he held important economic roles there. He was the Head of the Department of Economics for the Lviv Oblast Administration. He also worked as the Head of the Department of Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Industry.

In 2014, Shmyhal worked as a consultant for a People's Deputy of Ukraine. This is like a member of parliament. He also served as a deputy head at the Ministry of Revenues and Duties in Lviv Oblast.

Shmyhal ran for parliament in the 2014 Ukrainian parliamentary election. He was an independent candidate but did not win. In 2015, he also ran for the Lviv Oblast Council. This is a regional parliament, but he was not elected.

From 2015 to 2017, he was Vice President of a company called TVK Lvivkholod. This company distributes frozen goods. Later, from 2018 to 2019, he directed the Burshtyn TES. This is a large power plant in Ivano-Frankivsk.

On August 1, 2019, Denys Shmyhal became the Governor of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. This was a big step in his political career.

Then, on February 4, 2020, he was appointed Minister of Regional Development.

Becoming Prime Minister of Ukraine

Denys Shmyhal became the Prime Minister of Ukraine in March 2020. He took over from Oleksiy Honcharuk. In 2021, a magazine called Focus listed him as one of the 100 most influential Ukrainians. He was ranked 7th on that list.

Denys Shmyhal's Family Life

Denys Shmyhal is married to Kateryna Shmyhal. They have two daughters together. Kateryna used to own parts of a bakery and a bike rental business in Lviv. She sold her shares in these companies in 2019.
