Denys Anatoliiovych Shmyhal (Ukrainian: Денис Анатолійович Шмигаль born 15 October 1975) is a Ukrainian politician and businessman. He served as the 18th prime minister of Ukraine from March 2020 until July 2025. Before becoming prime minister, Shmyhal was the Governor of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast and also served as a minister in the government.
As Prime Minister, Shmyhal led Ukraine's efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine. He also helped guide the country's defense. By 2025, he had become the longest-serving prime minister in Ukraine's history. On 15 July 2025, he resigned from his role.

Denys Shmyhal: A Leader in Ukraine
Early Life and Education
Denys Shmyhal was born on 15 October 1975. His parents are Anatolii Ivanovych and Iryna Feliksovna.
In 1997, Shmyhal graduated from the Lviv Polytechnic university. He earned a special degree in economics in 2003. This degree is similar to a PhD.
Career Before Politics
After graduating in 1997, Shmyhal worked as an accountant. He held this job in various companies until September 2005.
From 2005 to 2009, he took on leadership roles. He was a Deputy General Director at "LA DIS". Later, he became a Director for "Comfort-Invest", an investment company. He also served as General Director of "Rosaninvest LLC".
Journey into Ukrainian Politics
Shmyhal began his political career in Ukraine's Lviv Oblast. He worked in several important roles from 2009 to 2013.
Roles in Lviv Oblast
Between 2009 and 2011, he was the Head of the Department of Economics. This was part of the Lviv Oblast Administration. Here, he worked with Oleh Nemchinov. Nemchinov later became a minister in Shmyhal's own government.
In 2012, Shmyhal led the Department of Economics and Industrial Policy. In 2013, he became the Head of the Department of Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Industry.
From 2015 to 2017, he was Vice President of TVK Lvivkholod. This company in Lviv distributed frozen goods. From 2018 to 2019, Shmyhal was the Director of the Burshtyn TES. This is a major electricity producer in Ivano-Frankivsk.
National Government Positions
On 1 August 2019, Shmyhal became the Governor of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. He held this position until he was appointed prime minister.
On 4 February 2020, he was appointed Minister of Regional Development.
Leading Ukraine as Prime Minister
Denys Shmyhal became the prime minister of Ukraine in March 2020. He took over from Oleksiy Honcharuk.
As prime minister, he was in charge of Ukraine's response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine.
By 2025, Denys Shmyhal had served longer than any other prime minister in Ukraine's history. In 2021, he was named among the 100 most influential Ukrainians. This was by the weekly magazine Focus, where he ranked 7th.

On 14 July 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to change the government. He suggested that Yulia Svyrydenko would become the new prime minister. President Zelenskyy also mentioned that Shmyhal might become the Minister of Defense. Shmyhal resigned as prime minister the next day, on 15 July. The Ukrainian parliament, called the Verkhovna Rada, accepted his resignation on 16 July.
Personal Life
Denys Shmyhal is married to Kateryna Shmyhal. They have two daughters. Kateryna was a co-owner of a bakery and a bike rental business in Lviv. She sold her shares in these companies in 2019.
