What is a Hawkeye?
The word "Hawkeye" first showed up in a famous book. It was called The Last of the Mohicans. Later, people started using "Hawkeyes" to describe the people of Iowa. This is how the state got its nickname, "The Hawkeye State."

The Iowa Hawkeyes have a strong history in many sports. They are especially known for their wrestling teams.
Wrestling Achievements
Iowa's wrestling team is one of the best in the country. They have won 34 Big Ten championships. They have also earned 23 national championships as a team. This makes them very successful in college wrestling.
Other National Championships
Besides wrestling, the Hawkeyes have won national championships in three other sports. These include men's gymnastics, football, and field hockey. This shows their strength across different sports.
Basketball and Baseball Highlights
In basketball, the Hawkeyes have reached the Final Four four times. The men's team made it three times. The women's team reached the Final Four once. The baseball team played in the College World Series in 1972. Iowa's softball team has also played in the Women's College World Series four times.
