History of Iowa Point

Iowa Point was first settled in 1854. The land was given by the U.S. Government. This was a payment for missionary work done at a nearby Native American mission.

The town quickly grew into an important place for shipping goods. Boats and wagons moved items between Leavenworth and Omaha. By 1857, about 3,000 people lived there. This made it the second biggest town on the Missouri River, after Leavenworth.

During the time leading up to the Civil War, people in Iowa Point had very strong disagreements about the issue of slavery. By the end of the Civil War, the town had been almost completely burned down. Many businesses were also gone. Iowa Point never fully recovered after this difficult period.

The first post office in Iowa Point opened in March 1855. It closed for a short time in 1914. It reopened later that same year. The post office then closed permanently in July 1933.
