Queen Iput
Daughter of Unas, wife of Teti and mother of Pepi I Meryre

Iput I was an ancient Egyptian queen. She was the daughter of King Unas, who was the last ruler of the Fifth Dynasty of Egypt. Iput I married Teti, who became the first Pharaoh of the Sixth Dynasty of Egypt. Their son was King Pepi I. Some historians think she might have ruled Egypt for a short time while her son Pepi I was still young.

Life as a Queen

Iput I was the daughter of King Unas from the Fifth Dynasty. Her mother was either Queen Nebet or Queen Khenut. Iput I married King Teti, who started the Sixth Dynasty of Egypt. Their son was King Pepi I.

You can see Iput I with her son Pepi on a special stone carving called a decree-stela, which was found in a place called Koptos. When archaeologists studied her remains, they found that she died when she was a middle-aged woman.

Iput I also had another son named Nebkauhor. She had several daughters too: Seshseshet Waatetkhethor, Seshseshet Idut, Seshseshet Nubkhetnebty, and Seshseshet Sathor.

Titles of Queen Iput I

Iput I had many important titles. Some titles showed that she was the daughter of a king. These included:

  • Daughter of the King of Upper and Lower Egypt
  • King’s Daughter of his body
  • God’s Daughter

Other titles showed that she was married to a pharaoh:

  • King’s Wife, his beloved
  • Companion of Horus
  • Great one of the hetes-sceptre

When her son Pepi I became king, Iput I gained even more important titles:

  • King’s Mother
  • Mother of the Dual King (meaning mother of the king of both Upper and Lower Egypt)
  • King’s Mother of the pyramid Mennefer-Pepy (referring to her son's pyramid complex)

Queen Iput's Burial

Iput I was buried in Saqqara, which is a famous ancient burial ground in Egypt. Her pyramid was built close to the pyramid of her husband, King Teti.

Archaeologists Victor Loret discovered the pyramids of Iput I and another queen named Khuit between 1897 and 1899. Inside Iput's burial chamber, they found a limestone sarcophagus and a coffin made of cedar wood. The remains of a middle-aged woman were found inside.

Some of the items buried with her have survived. These include special jars called canopic vessels, which held her internal organs. They also found a headrest and a beautiful gold bracelet. This gold bracelet was still on her arm when it was found!

The burial chamber also held several other items. These included polished red pottery and a cup made of rock crystal. Smaller model vessels and tools were also part of her burial goods. Some of these had once been covered in gold. Today, her remains and some of her treasures are kept at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
