Irgenhausen is a small village in Switzerland. It is part of the larger municipality of Pfäffikon in the canton of Zurich. This quiet village is known for its beautiful natural setting and its interesting history, especially its connection to the ancient Roman Empire.
Geography of Irgenhausen
Irgenhausen is located in the Pfäffikon district. This area is part of the Zürcher Oberland, a region in the canton of Zurich. The village sits right on the eastern shore of the Pfäffikersee, which is also known as Lake Pfäffikon. This lake is a popular spot for outdoor activities.
Irgenhausen's Roman History
Long ago, during the time of the Roman Empire, an important Roman road ran along the Pfäffikersee. This road connected different Roman settlements. One part of the road went from a place called Centum Prata (which is now Kempraten) near Lake Zürich. It then passed through Vitudurum (today's Oberwinterthur) and continued to Tasgetium (Eschenz) on the Rhine River.
To keep this important road safe, the Romans built a special fort called the Irgenhausen Castrum. A castrum was a Roman military camp or fortress. We don't know the original Roman name for this fort. However, Irgenhausen was mentioned in the year 811 AD as Camputuna sive Irincheshusa. Some historians think the fort might have been called Cambodunum, which is similar to the name of the nearby village of Kempten.
Points of Interest
The most famous landmark in Irgenhausen is the ancient Irgenhausen Castrum. This Roman fort is located right on the shore of the Pfäffikersee. It's a fascinating place to visit and learn about Roman times in Switzerland. You can explore the remains of the fort and imagine what life was like for the Roman soldiers who lived there centuries ago.
