Discovering the Iron Mountains

Where Are the Iron Mountains?

The Iron Mountains are located right where three states come together: Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina. This makes them a special spot, as you can be close to all three states at once! They are a "subrange," which means they are a smaller part of the much larger Blue Ridge Mountains.

Trails Through the Mountains

The Appalachian Trail

A famous hiking path called the Appalachian Trail goes right over the top of the Iron Mountains. This trail runs high above Watauga Lake and the Watauga River, near a town called Elizabethton, Tennessee. From there, the trail heads northeast, passing by Shady Valley, Tennessee. Finally, it climbs up Holston Mountain before crossing into the state of Virginia.

The Virginia Creeper Trail

Another historic trail, the Virginia Creeper Trail, also crosses through the Iron Mountains. This trail is popular for biking and walking. It stretches between the towns of Damascus and Whitetop, Virginia. Both of these trails offer amazing views and a chance to explore the natural beauty of the Iron Mountains.
