Irving is a small community called a hamlet in New York State. It is located in Chautauqua County. Parts of Irving are also in Cattaraugus and Erie Counties. Some areas are part of the Seneca Nation's land. Major roads like U.S. Route 20 and New York State Route 5 go through Irving. It is right next to Cattaraugus Creek. The hamlet is about 584 feet (178 m) above sea level. Its ZIP Code is 14081.

Irving and the Seneca Nation

Irving is very important to the Seneca Nation. It is home to the government offices for the Seneca Nation. These offices are on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation.

Irving shares the role of being the capital of the Seneca Nation. It alternates this role every two years. The other capital is Jimerson Town on the Allegany Reservation. Irving's current time as capital will finish in November 2024.

The hamlet has several businesses owned by the Seneca Nation. These include places that sell gasoline and other goods. There is also Seneca Gaming and Entertainment. This is a bingo hall owned by the Seneca Nation.

Nearby Communities

Sunset Bay is another small community. It is located just west of Irving. Sunset Bay sometimes experiences flooding. This can happen during warm winter days. It is caused by ice jams in the nearby Cattaraugus Creek.

Snyder Beach

Snyder Beach is a popular place in the summer. It is a beach community for people who are not members of the Seneca Nation. This is one of the few places like it on the Cattaraugus Reservation. About 170 families rent summer cottages there. Many families have been coming to Snyder Beach for generations.

In 2012, there was a discussion about who could live on this land. Seneca officials said that only the Tribal Council could give permission. By the end of that summer, the issue was resolved. The 170 families were allowed to stay. Their agreements to lease the cottages were honored.

Historical Landmark

The Thomas Indian School is located in Irving. This school was recognized as important in 1973. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
