The Irwin mango is a special type of mango that was first grown in Florida, USA. It's known for its beautiful red color and sweet taste.
History of the Irwin Mango
The very first Irwin mango tree started from a seed in Miami, Florida, back in 1939. It was a mix of two other mango types called Lippens and Haden. This special tree first grew fruit in 1945.
People quickly liked the Irwin mango because it tasted good, looked pretty, and was strong against diseases. It also grew well, so it became popular for selling and even for people to grow in their own gardens.
Today, the Irwin mango is grown in many countries around the world. You can find it in places like South Korea's Jeju Island, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia. It was first brought to Australia in the 1970s.
Scientists keep Irwin mango trees in special plant collections. These collections help protect different types of plants and are used for research. You can find Irwin trees at the USDA in Miami and at the University of Florida's research center.
What the Irwin Mango Looks Like
Irwin mangoes are shaped like an oval, with a rounded bottom and a pointy top. When they are ripe, their skin turns a bright, dark red, which makes them very eye-catching!
Inside, the fruit has yellow flesh. It tastes mild and sweet, with a nice smell. Unlike some other mangoes, the Irwin has no stringy fibers, making it very smooth to eat. Each fruit has one seed inside that grows only one sprout.
In Florida, Irwin mangoes are usually ready to pick from June to July. They often grow in bunches on the tree.
The trees themselves grow to a medium size. If they are not trimmed, they can grow taller than 20 feet. They have an open shape, meaning their branches spread out.
