Isaac Puente

Isaac Puente Amestoy (born June 3, 1896 – died September 1, 1936) was a Spanish doctor from the Basque Country. He was also a strong believer in anarchism, a political idea about freedom and equality. He was very active in a big workers' union called the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT).

Isaac Puente is most famous for a small book he wrote in 1932 called El comunismo libertario, which means "Libertarian Communism." This book shared his ideas about how society could be organized without a government. His ideas became the main plan for the CNT union at their big meeting in Zaragoza in May 1936, just before the Spanish Civil War began.

Early Life and Beliefs

Isaac Puente was born in a place called Las Carreras, near Biscay. He chose to become a doctor, helping people with their health. At the same time, he was deeply interested in political ideas. He believed in anarchism, which is a way of thinking that suggests people can live together peacefully and fairly without needing a powerful government to control them. He specifically supported "anarchist communism," where communities would share resources and work together for everyone's benefit.

Working for Change

Puente was a very active member of the CNT, which was a large union for workers. This union believed in "anarcho-syndicalism," meaning they wanted workers to organize and make changes through their unions. He was also part of another group called the Iberian Anarchist Federation.

He worked hard to spread his ideas and bring about change. In 1933, he was involved in some actions in Aragon and La Rioja that did not go as planned, and he faced difficulties because of them.

During the Spanish Civil War

The Spanish Civil War started in 1936. Isaac Puente continued to be active during this difficult time. Sadly, he was arrested and taken to Vitoria. He later died in Pancorbo in 1936 during the conflict. To honor him, a group of fighters was named the Isaac Puente battalion.
