The Isaac Watson House is a very old stone house in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. It is close to Trenton, the state capital. This historic house is the main office for the New Jersey State Society of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The DAR is a group of women who can trace their family history back to people who helped America gain its independence.
The house sits on a small hill, called a bluff. From here, you can look out over Watson's Creek. You can also see the Abbott Farm National Historic Landmark. This area is part of John A. Roebling Park, a large nature preserve where you can enjoy the outdoors.
History of the House
The Isaac Watson House was built in 1708 by a man named Isaac Watson. It is known as the oldest house in Mercer County. When it was first built, the property was huge. It covered about 800 acres of land. This land stretched all the way from the bluff down to the Delaware River.
Becoming a Historic Site
In 1964, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) helped restore the house. This was part of a celebration for New Jersey's 300th birthday. Because of its history, the house was added to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1972. Later, on January 21, 1974, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. These lists help protect important historical buildings.
