History of the Isaac Watson House
This stone house was built way back in 1708 by a person named Isaac Watson. It's known as the oldest house in Mercer County! Long ago, the land around the house was huge, about 800 acres. It stretched all the way from the hill where the house sits to the Delaware River.
Bringing the House Back to Life
In 1964, the house was carefully fixed up and made to look like it did when it was first built. This restoration was part of New Jersey's 300-year celebration. A dedicated person named Margaret G. Finley and a special committee from the DAR worked hard on this project.
It took Mrs. Finley and her team several years to gather enough money to rebuild the house. After the building was restored, Mrs. Finley had to find furniture that looked like it belonged in the 1700s. Many of these old-style pieces were given as gifts by the ladies of the DAR. Thanks to Margaret Finley, this amazing historical building was saved and brought back to its original beauty.
Recognized as a Historic Place
The Isaac Watson House is officially recognized as an important historical site. It was added to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1972. Later, on January 21, 1974, it was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These lists help protect important buildings and places across the country.
