The Abbott Farm Historic District is a very important National Historic Landmark archaeological site in New Jersey. An archaeological site is a place where people find old objects and structures. These finds help us learn about how people lived long ago. This district is special because it holds the largest known Middle Woodland village of its kind on the East Coast of the United States.
Scientists believe that Paleo-Indians lived in the Delaware Valley area for a very long time. This site was inhabited between 500 BC and 500 AD. It covers about 2,000 acres of marshlands and bluffs. These areas are in southern Mercer County and northern Burlington County. The towns involved are Hamilton Township, Bordentown, and Bordentown Township.
You can visit parts of the Abbott Marshlands through the John A. Roebling Memorial Park. This park offers access to both historic spots and natural areas. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 8, 1976. It was recognized for its huge importance in understanding prehistory and science.
The site's importance was first noticed in the late 1800s. This was thanks to Charles Conrad Abbott, an archaeologist. His farm was located on one of the bluffs overlooking the marshlands. Abbott published his findings in 1876. His discoveries started a big discussion about when the first humans arrived in the area. This debate greatly influenced how later archaeological work was done. Many items found at the site are now at Harvard University's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. Charles Conrad Abbott worked there as an assistant curator for many years.
