The Isaacs Art Center is a special art museum and shop located in Waimea. This town is on the Island of Hawaii. The center is run by the Hawaii Preparatory Academy. All the money earned helps fund scholarships for students at the school.

The center has many artworks that are always on display. It also sells art. You can see Hawaiian, Pan-Pacific, and Asian art here. It holds the world's largest collection of art by Madge Tennent. Other famous artists whose works are shown include Jean Charlot, D. Howard Hitchcock, and Jules Tavernier.

History of the Building

From School to Hospital

The building where the Isaacs Art Center is located is quite old. It was built in 1915. It was first used as the Waimea Elementary School. This was the first public school in the Waimea ranching community. It was also one of the earliest schools built in the Hawaiian plantation style.

The school was about 5,580 square feet in size. Its large size showed that Waimea's population was growing. The names of the original architect and builder are not known. In 1916, the first students came to the school. Many of them were children of people who worked at Parker Ranch.

During World War II, the building changed its purpose. From 1942 to 1946, it became a hospital. It helped United States Marine Corps soldiers. These soldiers were stationed near Waimea. At one point, about 30,000 soldiers were in the area. Many of them later fought in big battles like Iwo Jima and Okinawa. These battles were important parts of the Pacific War.

Restoring the Building

The building was carefully restored between 2002 and 2004. A major donor named George Isaacs helped a lot with this project. In 2003, the Historic Hawaii Foundation gave an award for the restoration. It was called the Historic Preservation Honor Award.

The building itself was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This means it is recognized as an important historical place. The Isaacs Art Center officially opened its doors in 2004.

Art Collection

The Isaacs Art Center displays its own art collection. It also shows art borrowed from private collectors. Some artworks are also available for sale. Most of the art shown is paintings. These paintings are by artists from Hawaii. They were created in the early and mid-1900s.

In 2005, the center received many artworks from the Tennent Art Foundation. This made the center's collection of Hawaiian art one of the best in the state. This gift included about 30 oil paintings and 40 works on paper by Madge Tennent.

Other Hawaiian artists in the collection include Jean Charlot and Herb Kawainui Kane. You can also see works by Huc-Mazelet Luquiens and Lloyd Sexton.
