Isaar is a small, friendly community in Outagamie County, Wisconsin. It's located about 10 miles from the city of Green Bay. Even though Isaar is a small place, it shares the same zip code as the nearby City of Seymour. Kids in Isaar go to schools that are part of the Seymour Community School District.

Isaar was started in 1867 by families who moved there from Bavaria, a region in Germany. They named their new home after the Isar River back in their homeland. For a long time, Isaar was known for its St. Sebastian Catholic Church.

The community is home to fun groups like the Isaar Trail Riders, which is a snowmobile club, and the Isaar Booster Club. The main part of Isaar is found where County Highway VV and Isaar Road meet. Isaar has always been a farming community, and it still is today. You can find a few businesses there, like a restaurant, a construction company, a food processing plant, and a plant nursery.

Getting Around Isaar

The main road in Isaar is County Highway VV. It runs from east to west and connects Isaar to bigger state highways. If you like snowmobiling, you'll be happy to know there are also snowmobile trails that go through the community!

Isaar's Location and Land

Isaar is located at 44°34′18″N 88°17′04″W / 44.57167°N 88.28444°W / 44.57167; -88.28444. The land around Isaar is very flat and rich, which is perfect for farming. Farmers in the area grow crops like cabbage and corn. There are also several creeks that flow through the area. Many of these creeks were made by people to help prevent flooding and protect the farm fields from water damage.

The Story of Isaar

Isaar is found in the northeastern part of the Town of Seymour. As we learned, it was named after the Isar River in Germany. The community was founded in the late 1860s by immigrants from Bavaria. Some of the first families to settle here included Kroner, Hackl, Ebert, Liebhabers, Krause, Wirth, Schmidt, Brugger, Hartl, and Noll.

Building the Church

In 1893, the people of Isaar wanted their own church. The Roman Catholic Bishop of Green Bay, Sebastian Gebhard Messmer, agreed. St. Sebastian Church was built by the people of Isaar themselves. It was a wooden building, and it's believed that John Kroner donated the land for it. The church was finished in 1893 and cost about $100. Two years later, a cemetery was started north of the church. In 1916, a house for the priest was built, meaning the church was no longer just a small mission.

Sadly, in December 1929, the original wooden church was destroyed by a fire. But the community didn't give up! A new brick church, which is the one you see today, was built soon after the fire. It was built by the Eisenreich Construction Company from Isaar.

Other Important Buildings

Ebert's Store was built in 1900. It was a general store, a grocery store, a saloon, and even a dance hall! Today, this building is known as the Isaar Inn. South of Ebert's store, there was a blacksmith shop built in the 1890s.

Isaar's first school was built in 1898, about a mile north of the community. It's now known as Seymour School District No. 7. In 1902, John Kroner opened a tavern north of the church cemetery. A sawmill was opened in 1908 by John Schmidt and Henry Wirth, about 200 feet east of Kroner's Tavern.

The first cheese factory in the area was built in 1890 by Jacob Noll, just one mile north of Isaar. In 1918, Isaar farmers started a cooperative cheese factory together. This factory, located just north of the Isaar Inn, made cheese until 1993.

Church and Community Events

St. Sebastian Church used to have an annual church picnic. All the church members would gather to play baseball and other games. The church was also famous for its "Annual Porky and Pancake Supper." This event was run by volunteers from the community and helped raise money for the church's youth group. It was especially known for its delicious potato pancakes, which were a favorite meal in Isaar. In 2002, St. Sebastian Church hosted the 50th anniversary of this event. That was the last Porky and Pancake Supper Isaar hosted, as there weren't enough volunteers to keep it going.
