Isabel is a small, quiet place in Benson County, North Dakota, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.
Today, Isabel is almost like a "ghost town" because there aren't any buildings or landmarks left that are still being used. In 2010, the area around Isabel, called Isabel Township, had 46 people living there. By 2020, that number had grown slightly to 47 people.
History of Isabel
Isabel has a few interesting stories from its past. Even though it's a very small place, some unique events have happened there.
The Traveling Crow
One surprising event happened on October 20, 1939. A pet crow that belonged to a farmer named Ben Alberts from Brooks, Alberta, Canada, got lost. This crow flew an amazing 800 miles south all the way to Isabel!
Sadly, a rancher in Isabel, J. H. Wortman, shot the crow. He didn't know it was a pet. Luckily, the crow had a name tag, which helped identify it. The crow likely flew so far south because it still had its natural animal instinct to migrate during the fall season.
Past Buildings
In 1923, Isabel had a church where people could gather. There was also a school in the area called the Isabel Country School. This school is now abandoned, meaning it's no longer used for teaching. These buildings show that Isabel was once a more active community.
