Education
Studying Environmental Biology
Isabel Dorado studied Environmental Biology at the University of Alicante. While there, she started her advanced studies (called a doctoral thesis) in the Department of Ecology. Her research focused on Dendrochronology, which is the study of tree rings.
She looked at how a type of pine tree grew in different places and at different ages. This helped her understand how climate and a tree's age affect how its wood forms.
Understanding Climate and Trees
During her doctoral research, Isabel Dorado explored how the environment and climate affect how trees grow in areas like the Mediterranean. She was very interested in two main things:
- How global warming limits tree growth.
- Problems with using tree rings to understand past climates in Mediterranean regions.
Isabel finished her doctoral thesis in 2011. It was about using tree rings from the last thousand years in the Iberian Peninsula to understand climate changes. This work was part of a big European project. The project aimed to figure out how Europe's climate changed over the last 1,000 years, using things like tree rings as clues.
Career
Researching Forest Changes
After finishing her doctoral studies, Isabel Dorado became a postdoctoral student. This means she continued her research after getting her doctorate. She worked at the Technical University of Munich for almost three years. Later, she joined the Center for Forestry Research (CIFOR-INIA) in Spain. There, she learned more about how global warming affects temperate and boreal forests.
Her research showed that forests in places that often have droughts, like the Mediterranean, are more likely to die in a warmer and drier climate.
Protecting Forests from Climate Change
In 2018, Isabel Dorado received a special scholarship called the La Caixa Young Postdoctoral Leaders Scholarship. With this, she researched how climate change might affect the growth of forests in the Mediterranean. She worked at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
Isabel focuses on forest ecology, which is about how forests adapt to climate change. Thanks to her grants, she has been able to create models of forests under different climate change scenarios. These models help her understand which tree species are likely to survive and which might not. This research also helps figure out what actions can be taken to protect forest cover, which is very important in the fight against climate change.
Women in Science
On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in 2020, Isabel Dorado shared her experiences as a scientist. She talked about the challenges women can face in science careers. She mentioned that forest ecology has traditionally been a field mostly dominated by men. Isabel believes that as women advance in their research careers, they can help change this. She stressed that sometimes, even with a great resume, women might be overlooked for opportunities. Isabel feels that scientists still need more stable jobs in research.
