Isacio Calleja García (born December 6, 1936 – died February 4, 2019) was a Spanish professional footballer. He played as a defender, which means his main job was to stop the other team from scoring goals. He spent most of his career playing for Atlético Madrid, one of Spain's biggest football clubs.

Playing for Clubs

Isacio Calleja was born in a place called Valle de Cerrato in Spain. He played football professionally for 14 years. Most of this time was spent with Atlético Madrid. He also had a very short time playing for CD Guadalajara in a lower league called the Tercera División.

Starting His Career

Calleja made his first appearance in La Liga, which is the top football league in Spain, on January 4, 1959. This was in a game against Real Oviedo. In his first season, he played nine full games. Soon after, he became a very important player for Atlético Madrid.

Winning Trophies

Isacio Calleja helped his team, Atlético Madrid (often called the Colchoneros), win many important trophies.

  • They won the Copa del Rey (Spain's main cup competition) two years in a row, in 1960 and 1961. Both times, they beat their big rivals, Real Madrid, in the final.
  • In the 1961–62 European Cup Winners' Cup, Atlético Madrid also won. This was a competition for teams across Europe. Calleja played in nine matches during this winning campaign.

On April 19, 1970, Calleja scored a goal in a game against CE Sabadell FC. This win helped Atlético Madrid become the champions of Spain that season. He stopped playing football in July 1972, when he was 35 years old. By then, he had won his fourth Spanish Cup. Overall, he played in 425 official matches for Atlético Madrid.

Playing for Spain

Isacio Calleja also played for the Spanish national team for more than ten years. He played his first game for Spain on April 19, 1961. This was a qualifying match for the 1962 FIFA World Cup against Wales.

European Champions

Calleja was a key player when Spain won the 1964 European Nations' Cup. This big tournament was held in Spain. He played in four matches during the qualifying rounds and the main competition. In total, he played 13 games for his country. In football, playing a game for your country is called earning a "cap."

Life After Football

After he finished his football career, Isacio Calleja went on to work as a solicitor. He had studied law before becoming a professional footballer. He passed away on February 4, 2019, in Madrid, at the age of 82.
