Freshman Year Highlights
As a freshman, he was named the preseason Big East Rookie of the Year. He also made the All-Rookie Team. He was chosen as Rookie of the Week twice in December. He missed nine games that season because of a foot injury.
Leading Seton Hall to Victory
After his second season (2015–16), Whitehead was chosen for the All-Big East first team. He also won the Haggerty Award. This award goes to the best men's college basketball player in the New York area.
Whitehead helped Seton Hall win their first Big East Championship in 23 years. They beat Creighton, Xavier, and Villanova to win the title. Whitehead was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. After this win, Seton Hall made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 10 years. They were defeated by the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the first round.
Moving to the NBA Draft
In March 2016, Whitehead decided to enter the NBA draft. This meant he gave up his last two years of college eligibility.

Time with the Brooklyn Nets (2016–2018)
On June 23, 2016, the Utah Jazz picked Whitehead as the 42nd player in the 2016 NBA draft. The next day, he was traded to his hometown team, the Brooklyn Nets. He signed with the Nets on July 8, 2016. He then joined the team for the 2016 NBA Summer League.
- On January 6, 2017, Whitehead achieved his first career double-double. He scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
- On March 10, 2017, he scored a career-high 24 points against the Dallas Mavericks.
- On April 8, 2017, he tied a team record for guards. He had 36 blocks in a single season, matching Darwin Cook's record from 1980–81.
In the 2017–18 season, he sometimes played for the Long Island Nets. This team is part of the NBA G League. He was later traded to the Denver Nuggets and then released. In 30 G League games that season, he averaged 22.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.
Playing in Russia (2018–2019)
On August 6, 2018, Whitehead signed with the Russian team Lokomotiv Kuban. He averaged 11.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. He left the team on January 7, 2019.
Return to the G League (2019)
On January 15, 2019, Whitehead signed a special contract with the Detroit Pistons. He did not play any games for the Pistons. He played four games in the NBA G League season, averaging 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game. In June 2019, he joined the Portland Trail Blazers for their Summer League team.
Playing in Kazakhstan (2019)
On October 10, 2019, Whitehead signed with BC Astana in the Kazakhstan Championship. In five games, he averaged 9.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists.
Time in Montenegro (2020–2021)
On January 25, 2020, Whitehead signed with Mornar Bar in Montenegro. He played five games before the season was stopped. He scored 24 points in his only Champions League game. He extended his contract with the team in April.
Playing in Turkey (2021–2022)
On August 27, 2021, Whitehead signed with Beşiktaş Icrypex in Turkey. He averaged 11.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game.
Time in Germany (2022–2023)
On September 23, 2022, he signed with Riesen Ludwigsburg in Germany. Whitehead and Ludwigsburg ended their contract on January 15, 2023.
Back to Turkey (2023)
On January 17, 2023, he signed again with Beşiktaş Emlakjet in Turkey.
