History of Iscomar Ferries
Iscomar started its business in 1979. At first, it used a small group of ships to carry containers. These ships moved goods across the sea.
Starting Passenger Services
In 1998, Iscomar began carrying people too. They started a passenger service between Alcudia in Mallorca and Ciutadella in Menorca. For this route, they used a ship called MS Nura Nova, which was built in Japan.
In 2005, Iscomar got a fast ferry. This ship was used for quick trips between Ibiza Town and Formentera. Another ship, Isabel del Mar, joined the fleet in 2008. However, by 2012, this ship was no longer in use.
Challenges and Closure
In October 2009, Iscomar faced financial problems. This meant they were not allowed to operate ships in or out of the port of Barcelona. After this, Iscomar stopped most of its routes. They only kept the service between Alcudia and Ciutadella.
On August 26, 2016, Iscomar announced sad news. They said they would close their last route and shut down completely. The ship Nura Nova made its final trip for Iscomar on September 11, 2016. This marked the end of Iscomar after more than 30 years of service. The company explained that there was too much competition on their last route. Other companies like Balearia and Trasmedmediterranea also operated ships on that same route.
