Isla San Lorenzo Sur is a cool island located in the Gulf of California. This gulf is a large body of water found east of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. The island is a wild and natural place, with no people living on it. It's part of the Mexicali Municipality. Right next to it, to the northwest, you'll find another island called Isla San Lorenzo Norte.
Amazing Animals
Isla San Lorenzo Sur is home to several interesting reptiles. Reptiles are cold-blooded animals, like snakes and lizards, that often have scales. On this island, scientists have found seven different kinds of reptiles.
Here are some of the reptiles you might find there:
- Aspidoscelis cana: This is a type of whiptail lizard.
- Crotalus lorenzoensis: This is a special rattlesnake called the San Lorenzo Island diamond rattlesnake.
- Hypsiglena ochrorhyncha: This snake is known as the coast night snake.
- Lampropeltis californiae: This is the California kingsnake.
- Phyllodactylus nocticolus: This gecko is called the peninsular leaf-toed gecko.
- Sauromalus hispidus: This large lizard is known as the spiny chuckwalla.
- Uta antiqua: This small lizard is the San Lorenzo Islands side-blotched lizard.
Special Snakes
One of the most unique animals on the island is the Crotalus lorenzoensis, or San Lorenzo Island diamond rattlesnake. This snake is endemic to the island. This means it lives only on Isla San Lorenzo Sur and nowhere else in the world! It's quite common on the island, which is good news for this special species.
