Isla Zacate Grande forms an island in the Gulf of Fonseca. This gulf is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean. The island is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) wide and 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) long.
About the Island
Isla Zacate Grande has seven smaller volcanoes around it. These are called satellite cones. One of these is Guegensi Island. It is located about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) from Zacate Grande.
The island is home to seven of the 13 Aldeas. These are like small towns or neighborhoods. They are part of the city of Amapala. These Aldeas are further divided into even smaller areas called hamlets.
