Isla de Cañas is a small village and a rural area in northwestern Argentina. It is located in Salta Province. The village sits 610 meters (about 2,000 feet) above sea level. You can find it on the eastern side of the Sierra de Santa Victoria mountains. It is about 307 kilometers (190 miles) from Salta, the capital city of the province.

Getting to Isla de Cañas can be a bit tricky. You can only reach it from a town called Oran. There are no regular bus services. Instead, private shuttles travel from Oran to Isla de Cañas three times a week. These shuttles are available before 5 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. From Isla de Cañas, you can also travel to Iruya. This trip is only possible during the winter months, from June to mid-November. You would need a tractor or a 4x4 truck to make this journey.

How Many People Live Here?

Isla de Cañas has been growing! In the year 1991, a census counted 727 people living there. By the 2001 census, the population had grown to 1,150 people. This was a big increase of over 58%!

What Does the Village Have?

Isla de Cañas has some important services for its residents. The town has electricity, so homes and buildings can have power. It also has Internet access and satellite television. Since December 2012, people can use mobile phones there too.

There is one fixed telephone in town. It is for public use, but it does not always work perfectly. It can be out of service for long periods. The village also has a church, a health center, and a pharmacy. There is even an airstrip. This airstrip is used sometimes for medical flights, which are very important for emergencies.

The Iruya River is also a key part of the area's natural setup. It flows through the municipality from west to east.

Isla de Cañas has schools for children and teenagers. There is a primary school for younger students. There is also a secondary school for older students. Since August 2012, these schools have special teachers. They provide bilingual intercultural teaching. This means they teach in two languages and respect different cultures.

The weather in Isla de Cañas is tropical. This means it is warm all year round. The area gets more rain each year compared to its neighbor, Iruya. The municipality covers a large area of 1,202 square kilometers (about 464 square miles). It is located over 600 meters (about 2,000 feet) above sea level.

Plants and Trees

The plants and trees in Isla de Cañas are very diverse. You can find many types of trees here. Some common ones include cebil (both regular and red cebil), cedar, and alder. There are also pine trees that grow on the hills. Other trees include walnut, peteribí (which can be white or red), kolla cedar, pacará, pink lapacho, and oak. You might also spot blackberry plants growing in the area.
