Islam Bibi: A Life of Courage
Early Life and Challenges
Islam Bibi was born in Kunduz province in 1974. When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in the 1990s, she became a refugee in Iran. She returned to Afghanistan in 2001.
After coming back, she focused on raising her family. Later, she decided to join the police force. This was a very brave choice because her family did not want her to. Her brother even tried to harm her because he felt she was dishonoring their family name.
Joining the Police Force
Bibi joined the police force in 2003. She quickly became a second lieutenant, which was a huge achievement for a woman at that time. She reported directly to the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) leadership. This made her the highest-ranking policewoman in Afghanistan.
Because of her important role, she received many threats. Female police officers like Bibi were often the first to enter homes during searches in areas where male officers were not allowed. They wore black scarves over their faces and sometimes even men's uniforms.
It was also very difficult for women in the police force because there were very few female restrooms at police stations. This made them vulnerable to harassment.
Her Tragic Death
On the morning of July 4, 2013, Islam Bibi was shot. She was leaving her home and riding a motorcycle with her son-in-law in Lashkar Gah. This city is the capital of Helmand province.
Bibi was badly wounded and later died from her injuries at the hospital. No official investigation was launched to find out who was responsible for the shooting.
