Starting His Career
Ismaël Bangoura started playing football at a local club called Athlético Coléah in Guinea. French talent scouts noticed him and he joined a team called Gazélec Ajaccio in France. He scored 15 goals in 44 games for them.
In 2005, he moved to Le Mans, a team in France's top league, Ligue 1. He scored a goal in his very first game for Le Mans, helping his team win 3–0 against Marseille. In his first season, he scored six goals in 23 games. He was Le Mans' top scorer in the 2006–07 season, scoring 12 goals.
Time at Dynamo Kyiv
On July 5, 2007, Bangoura signed a five-year contract with Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine. He quickly became a favorite among the fans because he was great at scoring goals. He was known for celebrating goals with his teammate, Pape Diakhaté, by doing an African dance.
Playing for Dynamo Kyiv gave Bangoura the chance to play in big European competitions. In the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League, he scored three goals in three games. One of his goals was a fantastic shot from 25 yards against Manchester United. He also scored two goals against Shakhtar Donetsk in a 2–1 win.
Bangoura also scored in the UEFA Cup (now called the Europa League) against Paris Saint-Germain. This helped Dynamo Kyiv reach the semi-finals, where they were eventually knocked out by Shakhtar Donetsk.
Moving to Stade Rennais
On July 2, 2009, Bangoura returned to France and joined Rennes. He signed a four-year deal. In his first game for Rennes on August 8, 2009, he scored an amazing overhead kick in a 3–0 win against Boulogne.
Playing for Al Nasr SC
On September 2, 2010, Bangoura moved to Al Nasr SC in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He signed a four-year contract. He scored his first goal for Al Nasr on September 16, 2010, in a 3–1 win. During the 2010–11 season, he scored 10 goals in 17 league matches.
In 2012, Bangoura decided to leave the club temporarily to play in the African Nations Cup. Al Nasr understood his decision but decided to replace him with other players because he would be away for too long.
Joining FC Nantes
Bangoura joined FC Nantes in France's Ligue 2 on January 31, 2012. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract. Later, his previous club, Al Nasr SC, sued him for breaking his contract. FIFA, the world football body, ruled that Bangoura and Nantes had to pay €4.5 million in compensation. Bangoura was also banned from playing for four months, and Nantes was banned from signing new players for two transfer windows. Both sides appealed this decision.
Before the final decision, on September 10, 2012, Bangoura joined Umm Salal in Qatar on a temporary loan. He served his playing ban while with the Qatari club for about two months.
Time at Al-Raed
In January 2016, Ismaël Bangoura signed with Al-Raed, a club in the Saudi Professional League in Saudi Arabia. He played for them until July 2019.
Playing for His Country
Ismaël Bangoura was an important player for the Guinea national football team. He played in the 2006 African Nations Cup, where Guinea reached the quarter-finals. He also represented Guinea in the tournament in 2008 and 2012.
He decided not to join Guinea's squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations so he could focus on his club career.
Personal Life
Ismaël Bangoura has both Guinean and French citizenship. In February 2020, he gave an interview to a Ukrainian football news agency, where he spoke positively about Ukrainian players and Dynamo Kyiv.
