Football Club de Mulhouse (often called FCM or just Mulhouse) is a French football team. It is based in the city of Mulhouse. The club started in 1893. Today, they play in the Championnat National 3, which is the fifth level of French football. Mulhouse plays its home games at the Stade de l'Ill in the city.
The club began as Fussball-Club Mülhausen in a part of Germany called Alsace-Lorraine. The region of Alsace has moved between French and German control many times. Mulhouse has played in French football since World War II. It is the second-oldest football club in France, after Le Havre AC.
Mulhouse has spent seven seasons in Ligue 1 and 27 seasons in Ligue 2. These are the top two professional leagues in France. The club's biggest win in France was the Division d'Honneur in 1928. They also won the Alsace Division d'Honneur seven times. When the club was in Germany, it won the Gauliga Elsaß three times.
Many famous football players and managers have been part of FC Mulhouse. These include Arsène Wenger and Raymond Domenech. Wenger is well-known for managing the English club Arsenal. Domenech also played for Mulhouse. He later managed the French national team from 2004 to 2010.
Club History
Football Club de Mulhouse started in 1893. It was first called Fussball Club Mülhausen. Two young Englishmen studying at the Mulhouse Chemistry School founded it. This was when Mulhouse was part of Germany. These students taught football to their friends. Soon, a club was formed.
In 1901, another group of players joined them. These players were called the "Young Boys." The club joined a German football federation by 1904. They faced some money problems in 1905–06 but kept going.
After World War I, France took back the Alsace region from Germany. The club then became FC Mulhouse (FCM). They played in the top regional league, the Division d'Honneur – Alsace. They won this league in 1921. They were second in 1926. FCM then won the league five times in a row from 1928 to 1932. Their 1932 regional win led to a victory in the Coupe Sochaux. This was an important competition before the national championship began.
French football then changed to a national league system. FCM played one season in the First Division. Then they moved down to a lower league. They returned to the top league in 1934. But they were moved down again in 1937.
When World War II began, Germany took back Alsace. FCM played in Germany's regional league, the Gauliga Elsaß, in 1941. They became very strong there. They won titles in 1941, 1943, and 1944. However, they did not win in the German national championship playoffs. Football games in the Gauliga stopped during the 1944–45 season. This was because Allied armies were moving into Germany.
After the war, FCM returned to French football. They played one season in the second division. Then they moved to amateur level play. They stayed there until 1970. The club had a tough time in the second division for six seasons. But their performance got better in the 1980s. FCM became a strong second division team. They played in the top league for one season in 1982–83 and again in 1989–90. In the early 1990s, the club was called FC Mulhouse Sud-Alsace. They continued to play in the second tier until 1998.
In 1999, the club faced serious money problems and had to restart as an amateur team. In 2005, they moved up from the CFA 2 (fifth division) to the CFA (third division). This was the highest amateur league in France.
In January 2017, an American businessman named Gary Allen bought the club. He invested money to help the club avoid financial trouble. The goal was to help the club reach Ligue 2.
In 2020, the club was moved down from Championnat National 2. This was due to money issues, even though they finished 12th. On July 12, 2022, Mulhouse was moved down to Régional 1 for financial reasons. Four days later, Gary Allen left his role as president. On July 21, 2022, the club was placed under court supervision. This was due to reported debts of 500,000 euros.
Home Stadium
Since 1979, FC Mulhouse has played its home games at the Stade de l'Ill. Before that, they played at the Stade Vélodrome. This was between 1906 and the end of World War I. After the war, they played at the Stade de Bourtzwiller.
