Manfred Kaltz (born January 6, 1953) is a famous German former football player and manager. He was known for playing as a right-back, which is a defensive position on the right side of the field.

Manfred Kaltz spent most of his career playing for Hamburger SV (often called HSV) in the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league. He played for HSV from 1971 to 1989. Later, he played briefly for Girondins Bordeaux and FC Mulhouse in France. He then returned to HSV for his final season in 1990–1991.

He played in 581 Bundesliga games for Hamburger SV. This makes him the player with the second-highest number of games in Bundesliga history. Kaltz was also very good at taking penalty kicks. He scored 53 of his 76 goals from the penalty spot, which is a record in the Bundesliga.

Internationally, Kaltz was part of the West Germany squad. They won the UEFA European Championship in 1980.

"Banana Crosses"

Kaltz was famous for his special right-footed crosses. A cross is when a player kicks the ball from the side of the field into the middle, hoping a teammate can score. Kaltz hit his crosses with so much spin that they would curve like a banana.

These unique crosses were lovingly called "Bananenflanken" ("banana crosses"). He often used this technique to help his teammate, the strong striker Horst Hrubesch. Many of Hrubesch's 96 goals for HSV came from Kaltz's banana crosses, which Hrubesch would head into the goal. Hrubesch once famously described their teamwork by saying, "Manni banana, I head, goal."
