Lucien Laurent's Football Journey
Lucien Laurent was born in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, a town near Paris, France. He had an older brother, Jean Laurent, who also played football for France. Both brothers were part of the French team for the 1930 World Cup. Lucien was also on the squad for the 1928 Summer Olympics, but he did not play in any games there.
Early Football Days
From 1921 to 1930, Lucien played for a team called Cercle Athlétique de Paris. This was a semi-professional team, meaning players got some money, but it wasn't their full-time job. Later, he joined Sochaux. This team was linked to the car company Peugeot, and many players, including Laurent, worked for the company.
When he played in the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay, he was considered an amateur player. This meant he only received a small payment from the French Football Federation to cover his costs.
Scoring the First World Cup Goal
On July 13, 1930, at the Estadio Pocitos stadium in Montevideo, Uruguay, Lucien Laurent made history. In the 19th minute of a game against Mexico, he scored the first-ever goal in a World Cup match. It was a fantastic shot called a volley.
France won that game 4–1. However, they lost their next matches against Argentina and Chile. This meant France was knocked out of the tournament early. Lucien couldn't play in the third game because of an injury.
Later Career and World War II
Lucien Laurent was chosen for the French team again for the 1934 World Cup. Sadly, he couldn't play due to another injury. After that, he played for several other clubs, including Rennes until 1937, and then RC Strasbourg until 1939.
In total, Lucien played 10 games for France. Besides his famous World Cup goal, he scored one more goal against England in May 1931.
During World War II, Lucien joined the French army. He was captured and spent three years as a prisoner of war in Germany. After being released in 1943, he played football for Besançon for two more years. He stopped playing professionally in 1946 and became a coach for young players.
Lucien Laurent was the only player from the 1930 French team who lived long enough to see France win the 1998 World Cup on their home soil. He passed away seven years later in 2005, at the age of 97.
Achievements
- Finalist in the 1928 French Cup with CA Paris.
