Biography
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Ismael Serrano grew up in the neighborhood of Vallecas in Madrid, Spain. He was born there on March 9, 1974. After studying Physics at the Complutense University of Madrid, Ismael decided to follow his passion for music. In the early 1990s, he began his musical journey by singing and playing guitar in small cafes around Madrid. These places, like Libertad 8, Galileo, and Nuevos Juglares, were popular spots for folk-style music. This type of music was very popular, especially because it reminded people of older "protest" songs that were important during a time of change in Spain. It also connected to a similar music movement in Latin America.
First Album Success: Atrapados en Azul
In 1997, Ismael Serrano signed with a music company called Polygram (which is now Universal Music). He then released his first album, Atrapados en Azul. This album included popular songs like "Papá cuéntame otra vez" (Dad, tell me again), "Vértigo" (Vertigo), and "Amo tanto la vida" (I love life so much). These songs became very popular with young people in Spain and Latin America. Because of this successful first album, he was nominated for "Best New Artist" at the Spanish Musical Awards.
Growing Popularity with New Albums
Ismael's next album, La memoria de los peces (The Memory of the Fish), came out in 1998. It became even more popular, selling enough copies to be called "Platinum" in Spain and "Gold" in Argentina. His third album, Los paraísos desiertos (The Deserted Paradises), released in 2000, showed a new side to his music. He started to mix in jazz and African sounds. This album also brought him two important nominations: "Best Original Song" for the Goya Movie Awards (Spain's version of the Oscars) for his song "Km.0," and "Best Sound Engineering" at the 2001 Latin Grammy Awards.
More Music Releases (2002–2007)
Ismael Serrano continued to release new music in the following years. These albums included La traición de Wendy (Wendy's Betrayal) in 2002, and Principio de Incertidumbre (Principle of Uncertainty) in 2003, which was a double live concert album. He then released Naves ardiendo más allá de Orión (Ships Burning Beyond Orion) in 2005, a title inspired by the movie Blade Runner. His album Sueños de un hombre despierto (Dreams of a Waking Man) came out in 2007. These albums helped Ismael Serrano become known as one of the most important singer-songwriters in the Latin music world.
Working in Movies
Ismael Serrano has also been involved in movies. In 2000, he sang the main song for the film Km. 0. This movie was a romantic comedy about different people meeting at Kilometre Zero in Madrid. In May 2002, he also took part in his second movie, El corazón de Jesus (The Heart of Jesus). This film was a project from Germany, Chile, and Bolivia.
A Look Back: El Viaje De Rosetta
In late 2006, Ismael Serrano celebrated 10 years since his first CD was released. To mark this special occasion, he put out a collection of his work called "El Viaje De Rosetta" (Rosetta's Journey). This special set included two CDs: one with all his popular singles, and another with rare songs, live performances, and songs he worked on with other artists. It also came with a booklet that told more about his music.
