Ismene Shakuntal Debi Krishnadath is a well-known writer from Suriname. She was born on January 25, 1956. She is famous for writing many books for children and young people. She also started her own publishing company to help share stories.

About Ismene Krishnadath
Early Life and Education
Ismene Krishnadath was born in Paramaribo, which is the capital city of Suriname. When she was a child, she lived in both Suriname and Utrecht, Netherlands. She went to Utrecht University to study education. This means she learned how to teach and help people learn.
Returning to Suriname
In 1975, Suriname became an independent country. This was a very important moment for the nation. Ismene Krishnadath was the very first person to apply for citizenship in the new independent Suriname. She even received one of the first passports! In 1979, she moved back to live in Suriname.
For ten years, she worked as a teacher, helping to train other teachers. From 1990, she became an education consultant. This means she advised schools and teachers on how to improve learning. She was also part of a group called Kenki Skoro, which worked to make education better and more modern.
Becoming a Writer and Publisher
In 1989, Ismene Krishnadath started her own publishing company called Publishing Services Suriname. She also created a special publisher for young children's books called Lees mee (which means "Read Along").
She became a very active writer, especially for children and young adults. Many of her books were illustrated by Gerold Slijngard. Ismene Krishnadath also writes books for adults.
Awards and Recognition
Ismene Krishnadath has received several important awards for her work.
- In 1993, she won the first-ever State Prize for Children's Literature. This award recognized her amazing contributions to children's books in Suriname.
- In 2011, she was given the Henri Frans de Ziel Culture Prize. This award honored her dedication to the literary world in Suriname.
For ten years, she was the leader of a group of Surinamese writers called Schrijversgroep '77.
