Isortoq Fjord (also known as Danish: Søndre Isortoq in Danish) is a long, narrow arm of the sea, called a fjord, located in western Greenland. It's part of the Qeqqata region. This fjord stretches out to the east of a town called Maniitsoq and eventually flows into the Davis Strait.
A very important river named Majorqaq flows into the very end of Isortoq Fjord. This river is one of the widest in western Greenland! It carries water from the huge Greenland ice sheet, which is a massive sheet of ice covering most of Greenland.
About Isortoq Fjord
What's it like?
Isortoq Fjord is about 45 kilometers (or 28 miles) long. At its inner end, where the land meets the water, you'll find a wide area formed by the Majorqaq river. This area is called a delta, where the river spreads out and deposits sand and mud. A smaller river, Isuitsup Kuua, also flows into the fjord from the east.
The fjord then flows towards the southwest. It opens up into the Davis Strait, which is a part of the Atlantic Ocean. This opening is located southeast of the town of Maniitsoq. Near the mouth of the fjord, especially on the northern side, you can see many small rocky islands called skerries.
Who lives there?
The areas right along the shores of Isortoq Fjord are not home to any people. However, the town of Maniitsoq is not far away. It's located about 10 kilometers (or 6 miles) northwest of where the fjord meets the sea. Maniitsoq is built on an island that shares the same name.
