How Qeqqata Was Formed
Qeqqata was created by joining a few different areas. Before 2009, these areas were separate. They included the area around Kangerlussuaq. It also brought together two older areas: Maniitsoq and Sisimiut.
Geography of Qeqqata
Qeqqata is located in western Greenland. To the south and east, it shares a border with the Sermersooq area. Most towns and businesses are found along the coast. To the north, Qeqqata borders the Qeqertalik area.
The western coast of Qeqqata faces the Davis Strait. This strait is a body of water that separates Greenland from Baffin Island. Qeqqata covers about 115,500 square kilometers (44,595 square miles). This makes it the third-smallest area in Greenland.
Towns and Settlements
Qeqqata is divided into different areas. Each area has its own towns and smaller settlements.
Maniitsoq Area Towns
- Maniitsoq (also known as Sukkertoppen)
- Atammik
- Kangaamiut
- Napasoq
Sisimiut Area Towns
- Sisimiut (also known as Holsteinsborg)
- Itilleq
- Kangerlussuaq (also known as Søndrestrøm)
- Sarfannguit
Travel and Transport
Getting around in Greenland is unique. There are no roads that connect different towns. This means people travel between settlements in other ways.
Qeqqata has three airports. These are Kangerlussuaq, Maniitsoq, and Sisimiut. Kangerlussuaq is the main international airport for all of Greenland. Other smaller towns and settlements rely on boats for transport.
A special road for off-road vehicles was built between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut. This road was finished between 2020 and 2021.
