Israel Abramofsky (born September 10, 1888 – died January 16, 1975) was a talented artist. He was born in the Russian Empire, which is now Ukraine. He studied art in Paris, France, and later moved to the United States. Abramofsky was well-known for his beautiful landscape paintings. He also painted scenes showing Jewish life in Eastern Europe. He sometimes used another name, Irving Aibel.

The Life of Israel Abramofsky

Abramofsky was born in Kiev, a city in the Russian Empire. This area is now part of Ukraine. He left Russia when it was ruled by a "Czar" (a king). He went to Vienna, Austria. There, he first became interested in art.

He lived for a short time in Paris, France. Then, in 1909, he came to the United States. Toledo, Ohio became his new home.

Abramofsky went back to Paris several times. He visited in 1914, 1920, and 1925. He studied art with famous teachers like Jean Paul Laurens and Lucien Simon. He attended the Julian Academy, a well-known art school. In Paris, he saw the works of many important artists. For his first trip back to Paris from Ohio, he had a special letter. It was from Brand Whitlock, the mayor of Toledo.

His artworks are displayed in many important places. These include the Luxembourg Museum in France and the Museum in Israel. His art is also in the Brooklyn Museum in the U.S. Many museums in Ohio and private art collections own his paintings.

Abramofsky once wrote about his art. He said he hoped his work was part of the 20th century. He also felt that his paintings of Jewish people showed their traditions and beliefs. He believed these traditions had kept them unique for a very long time.

  • Another exhibition and sale of his art was held after he passed away. It was called "I. Abramofsky, Exhibition and Sale." This event took place from March 28 to April 4, 1976, at Temple Shomer Emunim in Sylvania, Ohio.
