István Kausz (born August 18, 1932 – died June 3, 2020) was a talented fencer from Hungary. He is most famous for winning a gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics. This big win was in the team épée event, where he competed with his teammates.
Kausz was born in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. He started his sports career at the Budapest Vasas Sports Club. Later, he moved to Budapest Progress and then to OSC, where he stayed until he retired from fencing in 1970.

From Pentathlon to Fencing
István Kausz didn't start out just as a fencer. He first competed as a pentathlete. A pentathlon is a sport with five different events. These events include fencing, swimming, horse riding, shooting, and running.
Eventually, Kausz decided to focus only on fencing. He specialized in the épée style of fencing. The épée is one of the three main types of swords used in fencing, along with the foil and sabre.
World Championships and Olympics
Kausz was a key member of the Hungarian fencing team. In 1959, his team won the gold medal in the épée team event. This exciting competition took place in his hometown of Budapest.
The next year, he competed in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy.
1960 Olympics Performance
In the individual épée event at the 1960 Olympics, Kausz did well. He made it through three rounds of competition. However, he finished last in his semi-final group and did not advance to the finals.
In the team épée event, the Hungarian team reached the semi-finals. They lost to Great Britain in a close match. Then, they competed against the Soviet Union for the bronze medal but lost again.
Individual World Title
Between his Olympic appearances, Kausz achieved a major personal victory. He won the individual gold medal at the 1962 World Fencing Championships. This showed he was one of the best épée fencers in the world.
1964 Tokyo Olympics Gold
At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Kausz competed again. In the individual épée event, he only reached the second round.
However, the team épée event was a huge success. Kausz teamed up with Győző Kulcsár, Zoltán Nemere, Tamás Gábor, and Árpád Bárány. They fenced their way to the final match. There, they defeated the strong Italian team to win the gold medal for Hungary. This was a proud moment for Kausz and his country.
Life After Fencing
István Kausz was not just a talented athlete. While he was competing, he also studied medicine. He earned a degree and became a doctor.
After retiring from fencing, Kausz used his medical skills to help other athletes. He became a doctor for the Hungarian swimming team. He also joined the Hungarian Olympic medical team for six different Summer Olympic Games. This shows his dedication to sports even after his own competitive career ended.
