Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Isuzu Rodeo was a type of SUV (that's a car built for both city driving and off-road adventures) that Isuzu made from 1991 to 2004. It was known as a mid-size SUV, meaning it was bigger than a small car but not as huge as some trucks.

What Was the Isuzu Rodeo?

The Isuzu Rodeo was a popular choice for families and people who needed a tough vehicle. It was designed to be strong and reliable.

Early Models (1991-1997)

The first Isuzu Rodeos came out in 1991. These early models often had a 2.6-liter, 4-cylinder engine. This engine could produce about 120 horsepower. Horsepower is a way to measure how powerful an engine is. Many of these Rodeos were 2WD, meaning only two of their wheels powered the car forward.

Engine Choices and Features

You could also choose a Rodeo with a more powerful V6 engine. A V6 engine has six cylinders, which usually means more power. Some Rodeos also came with four-wheel drive. This system sends power to all four wheels, which is great for driving on rough roads or in bad weather.

Safety Improvements

Early versions of the Rodeo had some concerns about their crash test results. This means they didn't perform as well as newer cars in safety tests. However, Isuzu worked to make the Rodeo safer. In 1995, they added front airbags for the first time. Airbags are safety cushions that inflate very quickly in a crash to protect people inside the car.

Second Generation (1998-2004)

A new and improved version of the Isuzu Rodeo arrived in 1998. This second generation had a new V6 engine. This engine gave the Rodeo much more power, making it feel stronger and faster.

Design and Competition

Even though the outside look of the Rodeo didn't change a lot, it was still considered a very good SUV at the time. However, as years passed, many other car companies started making new and exciting SUVs. The Rodeo found it harder to keep up with these new competitors.

The Rodeo's Replacement

Isuzu eventually stopped making the Rodeo in 2004. In 2005, they replaced it with a new SUV called the Isuzu Ascender. The Ascender was a "badge-engineered" vehicle. This means it was actually a GMC Envoy car that Isuzu put its own name and badges on.
