Itacoatiara facts for kids

Itacoatiara is a lovely neighborhood in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is known for its beautiful beach and is a popular place for people to live.
The Amazing Beach
Itacoatiara beach is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Niterói. You can also get there by bus in about an hour.
The beach has soft, golden sand and clear blue or green water. The main part of the beach faces the wide Atlantic Ocean. This means it often has strong waves. While it might be tricky for casual swimmers, it's perfect for exciting water sports.
On the left side of the beach, there's a large rock wall called Costão. On the right side, you'll find a smaller, calmer spot called Prainha, which means "little beach." A big rock separates Prainha from the main beach, protecting it from big waves. This makes Prainha a safe and fun place for young children and their families to play.
Surfing Fun
Itacoatiara is super famous for its great conditions for surfing, bodysurfing, and bodyboarding. These sports are popular here for most of the year.
The Atlantic Ocean at Itacoatiara creates fast and powerful waves. They are usually about 3 to 6 feet tall. Sometimes, they can grow much larger, reaching up to 12 feet! A few times a year, huge swells can even bring waves up to 15 feet. However, such big waves are often too strong for good surfing.
There are three main spots where waves break on the beach. They are called Costão (on the left), Meio (in the middle), and Pampo (on the right). Each spot has different waves depending on the ocean's conditions. Behind the big rock that separates the main beach from Prainha, there's another spot called Shock. This spot is very challenging for surfing because of rocks sticking out of the water. Shock only gets good waves when the ocean swells are really big.
Climbing Adventures
Itacoatiara is also a favorite spot for climbers. It offers many different climbing routes and styles. Bouldering, which is climbing on large rocks without ropes, is often practiced in a small square called "Pracinha."
The Serra da Tiririca State Park is also located here. This park is special because UNESCO has recognized it as a World Biosphere Reserve. It offers many climbing routes, including abseiling (rappelling down ropes). You can also try different climbing styles like traditional climbing, sport climbing, and aid climbing.
