Where is the Museum?

The museum is inside the Italian Hall. This is a very old building, built in 1908. It was made to be a cultural hub for the Italian community. The Italian Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a very important historical site.

The Italian Hall is part of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument. This area is known as the birthplace of Los Angeles. It has some of the city's oldest buildings. You can also find other museums and public art here. The famous Olvera Street Mexican marketplace is nearby too. Today, the Italian Hall is the oldest building left from Los Angeles's old Little Italy. The museum uses about 6,000 square feet (560 m2) of space inside it.

How the Museum Started

The idea for this museum began in 1988. Soon after, a group was formed to help raise money. Their goal was to create the museum. In the first step, they raised almost $2 million. This money helped restore the historic Italian Hall building.

The museum gets its funding from a few places. The Historic Italian Hall Foundation is a non-profit group started in 1993. The City of Los Angeles also helps. Many private donors give money too.
