Italian mountain community facts for kids
The mountain communities (Italian: Comunità montana) are special groups of towns in Italy. They were created by a law in 1971.
Each mountain community is set up by the Region it belongs to. These communities include towns that are in mountain areas or at the foot of mountains. Their main goal is to help these mountain areas grow and improve. They also handle some jobs usually done by towns, like collecting waste.
You can find mountain communities in almost all regions of Italy. However, they do not exist in Sicily, Sardinia, or Trentino-Alto Adige.
What Do Mountain Communities Do?
Mountain communities work to make life better for people living in the mountains. They focus on things like:
- Helping local businesses and farms.
- Protecting the environment and nature.
- Improving roads and other services.
- Making sure people have good schools and healthcare.
They help these areas stay strong and vibrant.
Names in Different Languages

- In South Tyrol, the name in German is Bezirksgemeinschaft.
- In Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the name in Friulian is Comunitât montane or Comunitât di mont. The name in Slovene is Gorska skupnost.
