The History of Itter

Itter has a long and interesting past. The town was first mentioned in a very old document from the year 902. In this document, it was called "Uitaradorf". At that time, the small village was owned by the bishopric of Regensburg, which was an important religious area.

Famous Sights in Itter

One of the most well-known places in Itter is its small castle, called Itter Castle. This castle has a unique history, especially during World War II.

Itter Castle During World War II

During World War II, Itter Castle was used as a prison. It held important French people who were captured during the war. These included high-ranking officials and famous individuals.

Just two days before World War II officially ended, a special event happened at the castle. A battle took place there. What makes this battle so unusual is that American soldiers and German soldiers fought together against the Waffen-SS. This was one of only two times during the entire war that American and German forces fought on the same side.
